When Loek Ballintijn came ashore after a few years sailing, he was searching for a role that would provide him with plenty of challenges and action. Introduced to WIND by a recruitment consultant, he soon found what he was looking for.
Energy & enthusiasm
Attending an interview for the role of Works Manager, he was, he says, immediately impressed by the company.
“It was the incredible energy I encountered. Everybody I spoke to was enthusiastically giving all they’ve got. I was sold.”
A company on the move
Used to the hands-on work on board the ships, Loek quickly took to his new role at WIND, enjoying being on location of projects, leading the cable crews and communicating with the clients.
WIND is a company on the move, however. It wasn’t long before the business realised it was in need of a dedicated department to take care of its growing portfolio of equipment – everything from small radio sets right up to large cable carousels.
Loek stepped up, taking on the new function of Equipment Manager. Beginning with the hiring of external support, Loek soon began to build up an in-house team.
“When it came to creating the new team, WIND was really supportive. The management could see the value of having our own people, with in-house knowledge of all our equipment, committed to keeping it at the top of its game.”
Pride & pleasure
Loek quickly built up a crew of mechanics in the Netherlands, Taiwan and the USA, as well as taking on a further equipment engineer and a maintenance engineer. He’s not standing still, though – there are plans in place to double the number of WIND mechanics this year alone.
Loek takes a lot of pride – and pleasure – in the team he has helped to build up.
“The team is the most fun part of the job. There’s such a great spirit – everyone is so motivated to make sure our equipment is in the best possible shape, and we all take great pride in the role it plays in ensuring the success of our projects.”
Looking towards tomorrow
WIND continues to offer Loek the opportunity to develop, providing access to a range of training opportunities. For his part, he sees himself continuing to grow in his current role.
“I feel the company takes my development very seriously. They give me every opportunity to better myself and to learn new things. This is very helpful as my role is a dynamic one – as WIND is growing, so is my role within the company. The position of Equipment Manager is one that provides me with the challenges that I enjoy, and we have plenty of plans to look forward to for the coming years.”
In the coming months Loek will be busying himself on the continued development of his team, as well as setting up a service team able to offer a rapid response 24/7 in order to guarantee maximum uptime and keep projects on schedule.
“We are also setting a WIND Academy at the moment. With this, we will train the cable crew, globally, in an online environment. They will learn all about our equipment, including how to work safely, and how best to operate it. In this way, we, and our clients, will be able to get the best possible results from our equipment.”
