When Bram Tuinenburg came ashore, he found a warm welcome and a world of opportunity at Wind
Bram Tuinenburg began his maritime career at sea, sailing in the European short sea fleet and rising to the rank of Chief Mate. After a number of years on board, it was time to come ashore. At this point, Bram found himself with a choice of employment opportunities – one of which was at Wind.
Refreshing & dynamic
“Wind just felt like the best fit for me,” he says. “It felt really refreshing. A dynamic, young company full of energy and drive.”
That being the case, Bram took on the role of Works Manager in October 2023. He immediately felt at home at Wind.
“One of the first things I noticed was how helpful everyone is here. It doesn’t matter who you ask, everyone will try to help you and guide you in the right direction. We’re still a relatively small company and it feels like a big family.”
Never a dull moment
His role, he explains, is a very diverse one.
“In this job, together with the Project Manager, you are taking care of a lot of different tasks. The preparation stage is perhaps the most challenging time. You have to make sure that the project can be executed as it should be – that all the equipment is there, that the transportation is arranged, that the crew are ready and all documentation is in place. There’s a lot of interaction, too, with colleagues in other departments, but also with the client.
“You have a role to play in every aspect of the project. There’s certainly never a dull moment! It’s important to have a flexible mindset; we’re working with vessels and there’s always a chance of last-minute changes, but it’s always very rewarding.”
Change of scenery
The role also often provides him with a chance to experience a change of scenery.
“Obviously, I am not travelling as much as I did when I was at sea, but it’s very nice to still have that variety in my work. We have projects taking place all over the world, so I can be working in Amsterdam on one project, and then in the USA or Taiwan on the next.”
The reward of responsibility
As well as the diversity, Bram says, it is the responsibility he is given at Wind that contributes so much to his enjoyment of his work.
“When I arrived at the company, I was paired with another Works Manager for training. We worked together on a few projects so that I could learn my way, but very soon I was given my own projects to work on. I like this a lot; it is very rewarding to be given such freedom and responsibility so quickly, and to see the positive impact that your decisions can make.”
What’s next on the horizon?
A further benefit of working at Wind, Bram states, is the potential for development.
“There are a lot of opportunities here. The management are very open to hearing about your ambitions for the future. You see a lot of moment within the company, whether it’s people moving into more senior positions, or switching to another part of the business. Whichever direction you want to go in, there is a lot of support to help you reach your potential.”
For his part, Bram is looking forward to a number of possibilities.
“I am interested in the idea of working towards a role in project management. For now, though, I am really enjoying the role of Works Manager, so the first step for me might be Senior Works Manager – this would give me the chance to experience some really challenging and exciting projects.”
